Bob's 1982 Yamaha Vision 550 Motorcycle
This motorcycle has quite a history. It has only had
three owners. The first owner had it for about a year, the second had it from
1983 until 1997 and I've had it for 3 years. The second owner is an old friend
from high school and was even my wife's boyfriend for many years - weird, huh?
The bike shows 27k miles but really has between
30k and 35k miles. The speedometer drive unit was broken during a cross-country
trip and so there are some extra miles which aren't on the odometer. The bike
runs quite well. Since I got the bike, I've done the following in terms of
maintenance/mechanical items:
-
I overhauled the starter and replaced its
brushes
-
Replaced the broken speedometer drive
unit on at the front wheel hub
-
Replaced the fuel petcock
-
Replaced the starter clutch and rollers
which helped starting reliability considerably.
-
The final item I've done is a full
carburator overhaul which helped starting and performance in general.
The engine is very strong given its age. The only
notable problem with the bike is that if it is warm and shutoff, it floods on
startup. I've been unable to improve warm-starts, and the previous owner had the
same complaint when we purchased it in '97 and is a common problem for this
model. Frustrating, but not a killer item. The body is in good shape. The tank
has one "wrinkle" where the bike fell over in 1985 or 1986 when the
kickstand was in soft ground - ugh. The tires have a great deal of life left
also.
Specs: (quite futuristic for 1982)
